Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin surprised everyone, especially in the first part of the 2023 season, with the Spaniard scoring 8 podiums. Alonso warns that making even more progress will not be easy, though.
Despite showcasing his incredible talent even at the age of 42, Alonso did not manage to score his win number 33. Overall, Aston Martin’s 2023 results exceeded the Spaniard’s expectations. However, due to some poor performances by Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll, the team only achieved P5 in the constructors standings.
Despite a solid campaign in 2023, Alonso does not want to get too ahead of himself and is conscious about the team’s future.
“The starting point is a little bit better than what I thought,” said the Spaniard. “But now the real difficulty starts.
“Now comes the tricky period for Aston Martin. I think the next two or three years – to find that extra bit, to create something that no one has at that moment, to be creative, to be innovative, I think that’s maybe the biggest question mark that we need to face, and I think no one has the answer.”
Alonso added that throughout the 2023 season, the team has learned a lot, and that will benefit how Aston Martin will tackle the upcoming campaign. However, the two-time world champions knows that the team needs to remain focused and continue to learn and develop day after day.
“I think there are clear indications of some parts of the car that they were underperforming for a few events,” he noted. “They were also different philosophies on the pit lane, but also for us in the way you try to extract the performance of these cars.
“And I think now with all the experiments and all the knowledge of this year, we think we understand better the direction to develop the car.
“But these things are moving constantly – I don’t think that there is a magic bullet and a recipe to develop the car. If so, it would be very easy for everyone.”
