Andrea Stella has revealed that the team does not have a precise target for the 2024 season, but that the main goal is to improve the car development in the best way possible.
McLaren started the 2023 season on the back foot but managed to pull off an incredible comeback during the summer. New upgrades allowed both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to deliver great results until the end of the year.
Before the 2024 season, many expect McLaren to continue from where they left off last year. However, after being asked what are the team’s goals ahead of the new campaign, Stella said that the main focus is to understand what is required to better develop the new 2024 challenger and results will come as a consequence.
“I won’t talk about how we want to be second, first, third – because that’s not even the language we use internally at McLaren. We don’t talk about this,” Stella said in an interview with Motorsport.com.
“Results take care of themselves. What we talk about is: ‘What do we have to do in terms of aerodynamic development, mechanical development, how do we improve the interaction with the tires’?
“How do we deliver projects, how do we make sure that they actually deliver what we want? And that’s what the focus should be.”
Finally, Stella said that only when the cars hit the track in Bahrain, the team will be able to understand whether the job done over the winter has been good or not.
