Williams team principal James Vowles stated that he feels Logan Sargeant has much more potential than people think, and his gap to Alexander Albon is not too big.
After a difficult rookie season in 2023, where Sargeant scored just 1 point in Austin, his approach for the new season has changed, and Vowles thinks this will help the American to perform better and feel more comfortable in 2024.
“First and foremost, I’ve asked him to surprise the world in terms of his physical fitness, his approach, and his performance.
“We’ve changed quite a bit with him across the winter period; his training mechanisms and program are completely different behind the scenes.”
Moreover, Vowles said that last year, the gap with his teammate seemed bigger than it is because Williams was running out of parts, and the team wanted to spend resources on the 2024 challenger rather than the “old” car. Therefore, Sargeant’s car “wasn’t in the same specs as Alex,” said Vowles.
“At the end of the year, I was pretty open about this, perhaps midway through the year, his car wasn’t in the same specs as Alex.
“We were running out of bits because I was putting our focus on 2024. I didn’t want to spend time building new bits; I wanted to spend time building next year’s success, which resulted in him being slightly down on performance.
“So at times when the world thought he was underperforming, it wasn’t as offset as people felt.”
