Carlos Sainz dominated the Australian GP just two weeks after undergoing surgery. The Spaniard said he is “extremely happy” after a “rollercoaster” of emotions in the first part of 2023.
Sainz started second, but already on lap 2, he managed to overtake Max Verstappen, who retired one lap later. After that moment, the Ferrari driver never looked back.
“It was a really good race. I was feeling a bit stiff, physically it wasn’t the easiest. But I could manage my pace and I’m very happy and proud of everyone. This result shows that the hard work pays off.
“Life is sometimes crazy, you know, with what happened at the beginning of the year, then the podium in Bahrain, then the appendix, the comeback, and now the win. It’s a rollercoaster, but I loved it, and I’m extremely happy.”
Sainz felt he could fight for the win already from lap two when he overtook Verstappen. He was very confident in clean air and knew he could get it done.
“I felt I could keep up with him on the first lap and try to take DRS. Then he lost the car in turn 3, and that was my chance to overtake. Then, as soon as he was behind he started struggling with the brakes and that was it for him.
“From lap 2, when I was leading I said ‘I know I can get it done’ especially in clean air. There is always the risk of safety cars and red flags here, but luckily it was a clean race. I’m sorry for George and I hope is okay.
“Happy to take the win and be back here!”
