Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted that losing a key figure like Helmut Marko would “certainly be a loss” for Red Bull, while jokingly offering him a role at Mercedes.
Uncertainty regarding Marko’s future was raised during the Saudi Arabian GP, as he could face immediate suspension from the team. That is because the latter might have leaked information regarding the investigation surrounding Christian Horner.
Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff will have a meeting with Marko in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and the latter’s future could be decided. The decision might have consequences on other figures at Red Bull, one of those being Max Verstappen.
Therefore, Mercedes are following the case really closely, as they would like to sign Verstappen to replace Lewis Hamilton in 2025. That market move would be easier for the Brackley-based outfit if they also manage to bring Marko on board, giving him a position like the one Niki Lauda had.
“We’re missing our old mascot anyway,” said Wolff while smiling. “Then we’ll just take Helmut. He’s the right age. He doesn’t have a red cap, but then he’ll come to us.
“Helmut is not a child of sadness and was – or is – our favorite enemy. But he is a real racer. If they lose Helmut, it will certainly be a loss for Red Bull and for the team.”
Wolff also admitted that signing Verstappen wouldn’t be an easy task right now, as he wants to race with the fastest car, which is Red Bull right now.
“We have a seat available in 2025 and 2026. But Max will drive where there is the fastest car, and today that is the Red Bull.”
“I have a good relationship with Jos and also with Max. But that doesn’t mean that anyone on the professional side would see a change in the short term.”
